How To Build A Custom Toolbar Button With An Icon For Adobe Acrobat Or Reader In Under A Minute
You can save time in Acrobat or Reader by automating repetitive tasks by creating javascript functions which can be executed from custom menu items or toolbar buttons with as little as one mouse click.
Once you build your function you can add a couple of lines of code to your script that will insert a menu item or toolbar button into Acrobat or Reader. You can test your menu item or toolbar button immediately by running your script in the console. This will instantly insert the menu item or toolbar button which can be used and tested immediately. When you are satisfied with your creation you can save your script as a javascript file and install it the application javascripts folder.

When the script is installed properly it will run every time the PDF application starts up which will make the menu item or toolbar button available for the entire session. The toolbar button can have a label, an icon, and a tooltip that gives further instruction when you hover over the button with your mouse. If you have a lot of toolbar buttons you might want to skip the label and use an icon to save space on the toolbar.
The script to add menu items and toolbar buttons is pretty straightforward. Adding an icon, however, is more complex. The icon image must be converted to a stream with precise dimensions in order to display properly on the add-ons or quick tools toolbar. We have developed a tool pre-loaded with 140 icons that allows you to build a custom toolbar button with an icon in under a minute. Watch the video below and then
